13 Questions with Michael Baum, M.D.

April 3, 2015
Authored by Sara Brandon

He took a left at forestry through biochemistry and then applied to medical school. He married Denise (who now serves on the DKH Woman's Board) and during medical school started a family and had three children.

Upon completion of residency, Dr. Michael Baum knew he didn’t want to practice in a big city and traveled to Putnam on one of those beautiful sunny October days to check out a general surgery practice associated with Day Kimball Hospital.

The area captured his heart and drew him to the region, which provided outlets for his earlier life’s love of woods and other botanical life plus the opportunity to practice in a small community with a talented team of local surgeons

Today, Michael Baum, MD has a kickin’ playlist (if you don’t know Sharon Van Etten or New Pornographers, check them out; I didn’t and now I’m glad I did), drives a red Mini Cooper and isn’t too keen on computer technology. He’s also very quiet spoken until you cross into a topic he feels strongly about; while Dr. Baum’s playlist is full of variety, he is very clear about his values. It has earned him great respect from his colleagues and his patients alike.

He and Denise have raised their family (and now welcome their grandchildren) in their Pomfret home where he enjoys hiking in the woods adjoining his family’s homestead property. He builds stone walls in the warm months and chops wood for their woodstove in the cooler months.

He’s also managed to assemble somewhere close to 3,500 books in his personal library. I’ll bet you his collection is as varied as his taste in music, and all worth reading.
