Day Kimball Healthcare to recieve state grant to support hospital emergency department renovation project

June 14, 2013

Senate President Donald E. Williams (D-Brooklyn) was instrumental in securing the grant that, combined with favorable financing secured by the healthcare system,  will enable the “much-needed” project to move forward

PUTNAM, Conn. – Day Kimball Healthcare (DKH) today announced that it will receive a grant from the State of Connecticut and has secured a favorable financing package, which will enable the company to proceed with the previously-announced renovations to the Day Kimball Hospital emergency department. DKH had reported back in January that the emergency department project was in jeopardy of being delayed due to the state budget cuts to hospitals.

“Through the efforts of state Senate President Donald Williams, DKH will receive a $3.5 million state grant that will enable us to make infrastructure improvements necessary to support our much-needed hospital emergency department renovation project,” said Robert E. Smanik, FACHE, DKH president and CEO. “We are very appreciative of the Senator’s support of and interest in this critical effort, as the expansion and upgrading of our emergency department is an important part of an overall, systemic vision to continue to meet the healthcare needs of the people of Northeast Connecticut.”
“Few things have more importance to a region than a local state of the art community hospital emergency department,” said Williams.  "That’s why I strongly supported and worked to secure the critical funding for the completion of Day Kimball Hospital’s emergency department project.”
Smanik said that in addition to the state grant, DKH has secured a favorable financing package that not only supports the emergency department renovation project, but enables DKH to proceed with other needed capital improvements and to restructure existing debt.
There are two important benefits that will result from the rebuilding of the emergency department: increased space and modernization, which features the critical component of 24 all-private treatment rooms that includes dedicated rooms specially designed for behavioral health patients, and one double-sized trauma room.

“The emergency department renovation effort – which also is being generously supported by local residents and businesses – is part of our strategic plan to continue to offer high-quality, integrated healthcare,” concluded Smanik.
