'Tis the season of giving, and seeing a child's eyes light up with joy at a new gift or toy is a highlight of the holidays for many. But before you wrap up that perfect gift, read up on these tips and alerts to make sure the holidays stay happy and safe for the children in your life.

2014 "10 Worst Toys" list

W.A.T.C.H. (World Against Toys Causing Harm) recently released its annual "10 Worst Toys" list. The list includes this year's popular toys that exemplify some of the most common hazards found in toys on the market today.

It's a good idea to take a look through the list while keeping in mind that it is certainly not all-inclusive. Instead of concentrating only on the specific toys listed, pay attention to the features of the toy that caused the report's authors to include it in their list. Then ask yourself if there are toys in your home or on your child's wish list that have those same features.

In addition to the 2014 Worst Toys List, take a look through W.A.T.C.H.'s 15 Toy Hazards to Watch Out For for a helpful rundown of general features and guidelines to be aware of, that you may not have even thought about.

To stay safe all year long, learn the guidelines for children's product safety and where to get the latest recall information.

Of course, the issue of product safety is important all year long, not just during the holidays. So while you're thinking about it, take a few moments now to do a little reading up on general product safety guidelines and standards.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection's Product Safety and Bedding page offers links to great resources on selecting safe toys for children, standards for children's toys, bedding and furniture.

And the Consumer Product Safety Commission website offers a wide range of information and resources regarding product safety, as well as a complete listing of the latest product recalls for all ages. You can even sign up to receive recall alerts by e-mail.

Just as with the holiday season, the same is true for safety - it's not all about the toys and gifts.

There are other dangers to be aware of during the holidays other than potentially hazardous toys and gifts. Decorations, lights and seasonal plants can pose a danger too, if not chosen and displayed with care. Here are some helpful tips on holiday safety for children from Safe Kids Connecticut.
