PUTNAM, CONN. – Brenda Senecal, RN, has been named 2012 employee of the year at Day Kimball Healthcare (DKH). She is a clinical coordinator in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Day Kimball Hospital, which is part of the DKH integrated medical network. The announcement was made earlier this month at the DKH annual meeting by Robert E. Smanik, president and CEO, and John E. Burke, board chairman.

Senecal was chosen from among 12 “Employees of the Month.” She was organization’s July award winner. To be selected as Employees of the Month, individuals are nominated by either their supervisors or colleagues, and are then chosen by the Employee Council, which is a committee consisting of DKH employees from various parts of the organization. Employee of the Year is chosen by the Employee Council, as well.

“Brenda is truly a star among stars,” said Smanik. “She has an amazing ability to keep all her responsibilities in balance, as Brenda provides excellent patient care, is flexible and supportive of her co-workers, and manages a very active intensive care unit effectively and efficiently.”

Senecal began working at DKH in 1981. As clinical coordinator, her responsibilities include ensuring overall quality care delivery, which encompasses such areas as awareness of, and responsiveness to, patients’ needs; management of nursing staff; serving as patient and staff advocate; and practicing cost control.

“I’m completely overwhelmed,” said Senecal, after her name was announced. She continued, “There are so many good people deserving of this award, and to learn I was selected, makes me feel extra special and truly honored.”

Senecal is a graduate of Newton Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. In 1993, she was voted Day Kimball’s Nurse of the Year, and in 2012 she was recognized as a DKH Nightingale Award winner, both honors were a result of peer selection. Senecal resides in Putnam, Conn. with her husband, Glenn, and son, Andrew.
