PUTNAM, CT– John P. Miller, chairman of the board of directors, presided over Day Kimball Healthcare’s annual meeting held on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson. The meeting served to review the organization’s financial successes and accomplishments in fiscal year 2010, elect new corporators, elect the board of directors and officers, recognize an outgoing board member, announce Day Kimball Hospital’s employee of the year and create excitement over the organization’s expansions.
“Throughout the year I have had the privilege of experiencing many intricate aspects of Day Kimball Healthcare,” said Miller as he addressed the more than 250 meeting attendees. Miller described several opportunities such as touring the Lathrop Road building at the Plainfield Healthcare Center during construction and participating in the creation of the organization’s two television commercials. Through the hard work and dedication of all Day Kimball employees, the organization sustained financial stability under the leadership of President and CEO, Robert E. Smanik for the second year in a row.
Day Kimball’s expansion of services and locations continue to support the overall commitment to better health for Northeast Connecticut. Aside from the completion of the Lathrop Road Building to increase access to primary care, Day Kimball HomeCare moved its patient services offices from Plainfield to Griswold, creating more easily accessed care in the Griswold area. Also, the acquisition of the Kennedy Drive MRI in Putnam will increase Day Kimball’s geographic proximity and availability of services to more and more residents of Northeast Connecticut.
Other accomplishments for 2010 included the complete renovation of the visiting area of the behavioral health services department for patients, the two-phase Customer Service/C.A.R.E. Initiative to enhance quality of care and patient experiences while staying at the hospital, successfully growing the medical staff to nearly 300 highly-skilled physicians, surgeons and specialists, partnering with Jefferson Radiology enhance and expand diagnostic imaging services, welcoming Dr. Jeffrey Manning and Dr. Timothy Monahan who began offering sports medicine and dermatology services respectively in 2010 and donating mammogram and ultrasound machines to Togolese.
Several Day Kimball Healthcare services showed increases in the number of patients in 2010. These include diagnostic imaging services, the endoscopy procedures, special procedures and visits to the emergency department. Day Kimball HomeCare served nearly 62,000 town residents. Day Kimball HomeMakers served more than 400 clients, totaling 84,556 hours. Volunteers at Day Kimball donated over 29,000 hours in various departments throughout the organization. All of these accomplishments could not have happened without the team efforts of the organizations 1,200+ exemplary employees. One such employee, Barbara Poulin, switchboard operator, was named Day Kimball Hospital’s employee of the year at the annual meeting.
Fiscal year 2010 proved to be a success for Day Kimball Healthcare, reaching a net operating gain of more than $1.1 million which is owed to so many people, once again giving credit to Day Kimball Healthcare employees, along with all of the community members and organizations that continue to support the organization.
The Annual Corporators’ Meeting is held each year for Day Kimball Corporators; the best friends of Day Kimball Healthcare. As members of our community, corporators share Day Kimball Healthcare’s values and goals. They believe that everyone should be dedicated to quality healthcare and help make the organization’s goals become reality. Corporators partner with Day Kimball Healthcare through donating time, offering their skills and sharing their resources. Day Kimball Healthcare’s Board of Directors serve the organization with diligent leadership and copious amounts of time and energy. Mr. Miller said, “Each year, local residents as well as successful business and medical professionals are nominated for the Day Kimball Healthcare Board of Directors. The board is comprised of 15 outstanding individuals who have very impressive and diverse qualifications and we welcome their perspectives to our team.” Reelected board members were Garfield Danenhower, MD and Michael Baum, MD. The slate of Board Officers was approved as follows: Chairman, John P. Miller, Vice Chairman, Jack Burke, Secretary, John Graham, MD, Treasurer, Rochelle Alix, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, Michael Baum, MD. As Day Kimball welcomed new board member, Karen Charbonneau, a heartfelt goodbye was said to Daniel Rovero, after serving his allotted 9-year term as a Day Kimball board member. Rovero’s support and influence was significant on the Board of Directors and on the organization’s expansion efforts.
The President’s Report highlighted significant improvements that the organization has made and how the organization has been positioned to stand against the economic hardships facing healthcare today and in the future. Smanik described the reasons behind the expansion of Day Kimball’s services in Plainfield to meet the healthcare needs of that community as well as the up and coming Putnam Healthcare Center which will house physical medicine, blood draw services and Franklin Home Health.
