Dr. Marc Cerrone Chosen as Humanitarian of the Year by Putnam Lions Club

Day Kimball Healthcare Pediatrician Led Two Medical Missions

PUTNAM, CT - The Putnam Lions Club recently awarded Day Kimball Healthcare Pediatrician Dr. Marc Cerrone their “Humanitarian of the Year Award.” This honor was awarded to Dr. Cerrone because of his recent humanitarian activities serving the health needs of children and families in impoverished areas of the world, along with his significant involvement in this community.

“I am truly honored to be chosen for this award,” said Dr. Cerrone. “The work I do is by no means to gain such recognition, but I am hoping it will raise awareness for the health care needs outside of our area. My medical mission trips to Mongolia and Haiti have really opened my eyes to the level of poverty and the needs of the medically underserved in the world. I hope others will join me in helping to restore health and hope to those in need.”

Dr. Cerrone received this award from the Putnam Lions Club during their annual “Night of Giving.” Each year the Lions Club donates monies raised to local organizations and this year, Day Kimball Healthcare received nearly $4,000 for various departments including Day Kimball Hospital, Day Kimball HomeCare, Day Kimball HomeMakers, Chaplaincy, the Pediatric Center’s reading program, Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut, Oncology and the Annual Golf Classic.

Because of this award, Dr. Cerrone is now eligible to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award through the Lions Clubs International. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the Lions Club International’s highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism.

In 2007, Dr. Cerrone had the opportunity to lead a medical mission of healthcare professionals to a remote area in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. In 2009, he led another mission to an impoverished area of Haiti. Dr. Cerrone and his team treated several hundred children and adults, most of whom had never seen a doctor.

In 1999, Dr. Cerrone and his wife, Kate, moved from New York City to Northeast Connecticut after he accepted a job offer at Day Kimball’s Pediatric Centers. Dr. Cerrone is been very engaged in his community. Outside of his work as a pediatrician, Dr. Cerrone mentors students and residents who are interested in pediatrics. He is one of the few certified child sexual abuse examiners in the area and holds lectures for community groups on various pediatric health care issues. In addition to Day Kimball, Dr. Cerrone is the school physician for the Plainfield and Brooklyn school systems as well as Rectory Day Care and camp.

Dr. Cerrone enjoys the performing arts. He is an accomplished singer, has participated in several plays at the Bradley Theater and has readily volunteered to lend his voice for a variety of community fundraising events.
