Dear Friends of Hospice:

My name is Shirley Houle and I’m from North Grosvenordale. I have lived in town for 50 years. I feel very honored to be Chairperson for the Tree of Life Ceremony sponsored by Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut.

Eight years ago my son Shawn was diagnosed with appendix/colon cancer. He was given six months to live but fought a courageous battle for 22 months. Shawn passed away on September 3, 2001. During the last twelve months of his life Hospice was greatly involved in his care. My family and I had the opportunity to observe the Hospice Team at work during his last weeks with us. We found the Nurses & Hospice Staff very caring and sensitive not only to Shawn’s needs but to the family’s needs as well.

After Shawn’s passing I volunteered to take over the Annual Hospice Tree of Life Ceremony for the Town of Thompson. I felt this was my way of saying “Thank You” to Hospice! I owe Hospice everything for making my son’s last days as comfortable as possible and I hope that this program continues for other families in a similar situation.

We invite you and your family to join us again this year at the Tree of Life Ceremonies around Northeastern Connecticut on December 13, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. (see location details to the right) to honor and remember those loved ones that have passed away.

I look forward to having you participate in this event. However, if you are not able to attend please consider donating a light in memory of your loved one to symbolize the hope and care exemplified by the services of Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut.
