At Just 14, Bryan Letson is Going to "Give it a Tri" at a Triathlon
July 21, 2016
Monique Letson of Hampton, a patient access representative at Day Kimball Healthcare for the last four years, is very proud of her son. And as well she should be - at just 14, he's training hard to participate individually in all three legs of the DKH Give it a Tri triathlon on August 20.
"I am so nervous but proud of this kid, he has been riding about 20 miles every other day and running several times a week," Monique said, adding "My department - I have a great department - is excited and supporting him too, as he will be 'representing' Patient Access!"
For Bryan, this has been a long time coming. "I've wanted to do this since I was 12. I was at the hospital with my mom for a check-up and saw a Give it a Tri flyer. But I was too young then," he says.
The incoming Ellis Tech freshman participate in cross country at Parrish Hill school last year, and has played basketball in the past as well, which he says has helped with conditioning. For his first triathlon, Bryan says his goal is simply to finish. To train, he's been doing laps in his pool at home, biking along the Airline Trail (his record so far is 30 miles in one outing) and running around his neighborhood.
At a time when young people are often stereotyped as being glued to their video games and cell phones, Bryan says that many of his friends and classmates like to participate in sports and physical activity often - including, of course, him. So perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that when you ask Bryan why he wants to participate in the DKH Give it a Tri his answer is simply: "I just want to do this for fun."
